Knowledge-based Multi-agent Coordination

چکیده

In many domains, intelligent agents must coordinate their activities in order for them to be successful both individually and collectively. Over the last ten years, research in distributed arti cial intelligence has emphasized building knowledge-lean systems, where coordination emerges either from simple rules of behavior or from a deep understanding of general coordination strategies. In this paper we contend that there is alternative for domains in which the types and methods of coordination are well structured (even though the environment may be very unstructured and dynamic). The alternative is to build real-time knowledge-based agents that have a broad, but shallow understanding of how to coordinate. We demonstrate the viability of this approach by example. Speci cally, we have built agents that model the coordination performed by Navy and Air Force pilots and controllers in air-to-air and air-to-ground missions within a distributed interactive simulation environment. The major contribution of the paper is an examination of the requirements and approaches for supporting knowledgebased coordination, in terms of the structure of the domain, the agents' knowledge of the domain, and the underlying AI architecture.

Voltage Coordination of FACTS Devices in Power Systems Using RL-Based Multi-Agent Systems

This paper describes how multi-agent system technology can be used as the underpinning platform for voltage control in power systems. In this study, some FACTS (flexible AC transmission systems) devices are properly designed to coordinate their decisions and actions in order to provide a coordinated secondary voltage control mechanism based on multi-agent theory. Each device here is modeled as ...

Intelligent Agent Modeling and Generic Architecture Towards a Multi-Agent Healthcare Knowledge Management System

Intelligent agents are a powerful technology with many significant applications and are starting to assume more responsible in more critical tasks. One of the most important uses of agent technology is for problem–solving coordination. Coordination has been defined as managing the interdependencies between activities, ordering and locating actions in time in an attempt to maximize a possibly ch...

COOL: A Language for Describing Coordination in Multi Agent Systems

Agent interaction takes place at several levels. Current work in the ARPA Knowledge Sharing Effort has addressed the information content level by the KIF language and the intentional level by the KQML language. In this paper we address the coordination level by means of our Coordination Language (COOL) that relies on speech act based communication, but integrates it in a structured conversation...

The Bases of Effective Coordination in Decentralized Multi-Agent Systems

Coordination is a recurring theme in multiagent systems design. We consider the problem of achieving coordination in a system where the agents make autonomous decisions based solely on local knowledge. An open theoretical issue is what goes into achieving effective coordination? There is some folklore about the importance of the knowledge held by the different agents, but the rest of the rich a...

Developing Coherent Multiagent Systems using JAFMAS

The Java-based Agent Framework for Multi-Agent Systems (JAFMAS) provides a generic methodology for developing speech-act based multiagent systems (MAS) along with a set of classes to support implementing these agents in Java. The methodology follows five stages: (i) agent identification, (ii) definition of each agent’s conversations, (iii) determining the rules governing each agent’s conversati...

Use and Design of Ontology-based Multi-agent System for Multi-site Software Development Environment

Large software development projects involve several participants who are distributed geographically without face-to-face communication. To maintain collaborative work through effective communication and coordination, it is necessary to have a common understanding of terminology and methodology to clarify software engineering concepts and enable knowledge exchange and reuse. We consider an ontol...
